Two local students participated in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) World Leadership Congress during the last week of July in Chicago.

Local students were Andrew Smith of McConnellsburg High School in Fulton County, Pa., and Jessica Swarner of St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown.

This year’s event brought together 402 high school students representing almost all 50 states and 10 countries. Andrew was placed in a group with 11 other students who were from seven other states, Canada, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea.

Topics during the eight-day Congress included leadership growth, international economic conditions, poverty, global volunteerism, social entrepreneurism, and goal setting.

The selection process for the HOBY Congress begins each fall. For more information, go to www.hoby.org.
