Mail Call - Aug. 10

August 10, 2011

“I’m calling to say, Boonsboro, you are correct in the hummingbird nectar proportions. It is always one part sugar to four parts water. Any more is just too strong, and they certainly don’t need any red dye, any more than we do. But I use — I make smaller batches and do one-quarter cup of sugar to one cup of water, and I just boil it lightly, just maybe 30 seconds to a minute, so it doesn’t get too thick, and I have hummingbirds all over the place here. Yes, definitely, one part sugar, four parts water. So when I do make a big batch I do a half a cup to sugar to two cups of water, but never any red dye. If you use a good feeder, you don’t need red dye. Good luck.”

— Keedysville

“Thinking back to a statement by Vice President Cheney, who said that deficits don’t matter, the Republican hypocrisy concerning deficits would be laughable, if they weren’t putting our country in harm’s way.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“In Sunday’s paper, July 31, Victoria Ross wrote an article in there about a congressional reformat. I really like that idea. We should get behind her, and push these people out of office. She should keep writing, because she’s an excellent writer. She’s got a good mind.”

— Hagerstown

“I absolutely cannot understand my wife. I held the door open at church for an older lady with a walker Sunday, and she thought I was an absolute saint. Well, the same day at McDonald’s, I got up and opened the door for a lady who looked like she was about 23, 24 years old, and I heard about that for hours. I can’t understand the double standard we’ve got going here.”

— Sharpsburg

“The last few days, my daughter has gotten a couple calls from the Washington County detention center, obviously, to inmates’ phones, and it says that if you do not wish to accept this call, press 9. She pressed 9, and still gets calls afterwards. I told her to call the Washington County detention center to see if this could be taken care of, or if there’s any problem. Of course, nobody answers the phone at the Washington County detention center, as far as the inmates’ phones complaints yet. I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem, and what would they suggest to do.”

— Hagerstown

“The Republicans keep telling us that we cannot tax the millionaires and billionaires, because they create the jobs. They’ve been getting these tax breaks since President Bush. Where are the jobs? They certainly aren’t in Hagerstown or Washington County. Let’s see some jobs they’re creating before we give any more exemptions.”

— Hagerstown

“As usual, in Monday’s paper, people saying it’s time for a change again. Well, you vote for the person and not the party; Democrat, Republican, whatever. Vote for the individual themselves, no matter what party they’re with, and then maybe we would get somewhere. Get it?”

— Hancock

“I’m watching President Obama this morning, on his speech about the FAA. He blames it on the Republicans and the tea party people for not doing anything about it, but found out that they had a bill they sent to Harry Reid that he decided not to ... and without having everybody vote on it, secret ballot. So here he is blaming somebody else again.”

— Hagerstown

“This is a comment on the Republican Party that took over the House last election, promised all the jobs it was going to bring. Well, I see (John) Boehner did bring us two jobs. One is a caddy for his golf cart, and another was a tanning salon operator.”

— Hagerstown

“The tea party’s actions throughout the ... manufactured debt crisis shows they care much more about their rigid ideology than they do about the good of our country.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“You right-wingers and you Republicans, you see what you did to the stock market since you started playing games with this debt ceiling. The Congress and some of the Republicans are playing games with it, so our stock market is dropped by seven, eight hundred points.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m all in favor of the federal government cutting the FAA funds, which will totally eliminate all these puddle jumpers that they have, like the Washington County airport. They need to get involved with hundreds of others to cut, too, and eliminate the U.S. debt.”

— Washington County

“I just read about — this is Aug. 2 — about showing the abortion pictures. I disagree. I had to have one in 1991, and I got to see the remains on the table. I didn’t have a choice, and let me tell you, I still punish myself. I was a single parent, my husband left me, and it’s a very painful thing. You never forgive yourself.”

— Washington County

“This comment is for the lady who is 76 years old. I am 77 years old, and I wanted to tell her, she’s praising George Bush for his COLA raises, she better stop and think, it was a Democrat who gave her the Social Security in the first place. It wasn’t the Republicans that gave it to her, it was the Democrats. So ... I wasn’t being smart to her, just letting her know the facts.”

— Hagerstown

“You know what I don’t understand? How can this country elect someone who was a community organizer, especially in Chicago, and he was a senator for two years, become president of the U.S.? Look at the situation we’re in now.”

— Williamsport
