Mail Call - Aug. 9

August 09, 2011

“Concerning the article in the paper, to ‘Toss out the tea party,’ by Kathleen Parker, when you’re spending $300 billion a month and we are borrowing $120 billion of that, that is almost 43 cents out of every dollar. I thank God for people who are willing to stop spending and see where we can save. And I believe also that our founders, if she would check, when she made light about people praying to Jesus, I believe she will find out that our founders did a lot of praying before they made decisions. So thank God for America, and thank God for ‘In God we trust.’”

— Boonsboro

“What’s up with Mail Call? It seems like to me that you’ve been putting comments in that are so one-sided, you don’t get the other party’s opinion, second side. What’s up with that? Anyway, concerning the debt limit, well, didn’t our country leaders and presidents know what the limit was, instead of kept on spending and spending, and borrowing and borrowing? Yeah, people should know that it’s going to come to a stop and all, that they can’t borrow any more. But no, they just kept on borrowing and borrowing.”

— Greencastle, Pa.

“Some time ago, a person said they asked what a restaurant they were in was doing for the military. My husband has a Purple Heart from wounds sustained in the Korean War, and (some restaurants) offer a free meal on Veterans Day for current and past vets, and I think that’s wonderful. Current vets are carrying on the duty that others before them have carried. All should be honored. God bless America.”

— Hagerstown

“Concerning the illegals and their school tuition, if they’re illegal, send them back where they came from.”

— Williamsport

“To the Boonsboro caller quoting scripture, specifically, 2 Thessalonians 3:10: You attributed this verse to Jesus, when in fact it is thought to be Paul. I would advise you to read the entire chapter and the last verse, especially, where Paul advises to regard and warn the man who will not work as a brother.”

— Boonsboro

“This is in response to the caller from Hancock stating that he received cost-of-living increases when Bush was president but none since Obama became president. You do know that the president and Congress have nothing to do with your COLA, don’t you? Since 1973, the COLA is set by the Social Security Administration, using inflation statistics from the consumer price index. Because there was no COLA in 2009, Obama sent all of us seniors a $250 check. He tried to do the same in 2010, but the Republicans blocked him. When the tea party finishes revamping Social Security and Medicare, not getting a COLA will be the least of our worries.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about the food for hummingbirds. It should be one cup of sugar to five cups of water, should be boiled for five minutes and cooled, and then put in the feeder. And if you make it any stronger than that, it’ll kill the birds, because they get a fungus from too much sweetness.”

“To the person that lives in Falling Waters and they said they have hummingbirds, and they make their own nectar, they only use one cup of sugar and one cup of water: Your recipe is wrong. If you don’t believe me, get the book, the Audubon Society, dealing with hummingbirds. The recipe is one cup of sugar and four cups of water. If you continue making this recipe, you’re going to end up killing your birds or making them very sick. So please, for the sake of the birds.”

— Clear Spring

“I have read that feeding hummingbirds a solution too high in sugar content can be damaging to their kidneys. The correct formula for one cup of water should be only one-quarter cup of sugar.”
