Civil War author to present 'The War Came by Train' Thursday

August 09, 2011

If you've ever wanted to sit on the front lines of Civil War history, a noted Civil War writer and author will be at the Hagerstown Railroad Museum in City Park Thursday to help enthusiasts do just that.

Dan Toomey is the guest curator at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum for its five-year 150th Civil War anniversary commemoration. Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Toomey will present a free lecture and slide show titled "The War Came by Train."

Toomey will show audience members that the first front of the war was neither a political nor geographical boundary, but the main line of the B&O Railroad.

Toomey will explore this first front concept in depth with reference to other railroads, including the Western Maryland Railroad during the Gettysburg Campaign.

Everyone is invited to attend the presentation. The Hagerstown Railroad Museum is at 525 Highland Way, opposite the Mansion House Art Center. Admission to the presentation is free. For more information, call 301-739-8393 or email hagerhouse@hagerstownmd.org.
