Church to give away free school supplies

Shiloh United Methodist Church, 19731 Shiloh Church Road in Hagerstown, will distribute free school supplies to local school-age children Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the church.

Young at Heart will meet at the Olive Garden restaurant near Valley Mall on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0077 recorded losses for the week of 28 pounds. Barb Trumpower was the best TOPS loser and Bonnie Barnhart was the best KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) loser.  Barnhart said the pound puppy she received last week really worked for her. Janice Frye gave her pound puppy to Cheryl Bowen. Valerie Eccard has had nine consecutive weeks of losses. Winners of last month’s contest with the best losses were Deloris Hays and Charles Houser.

Dottie Alexander won the ha-ha prize. The no-no snack for the week is soda.

Patsy Price presented the program on “How to Eat, What to Eat,” which included a discussion on how to eat when you eat alone. Members shared advice and tips from their own experiences of living and eating alone vs. feeding a household.

Today is awards and T-shirt day. The play money auction will be Monday, Aug. 22, and the annual picnic will be Monday, Sept. 12.

HHS Class of 1943 planning reunion

In June, the Hagerstown High School Class of 1943 mailed invitations to classmates for their 2011 minireunion to be held at Fountain Head Country Club, Saturday, Sept. 17.

Social hour and registration begin at 11 a.m., followed by the welcoming/opening ceremony at noon. A buffet luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. Attire is casual.

Spouses of deceased classmates are invited, as well as anyone who would have graduated with the Class of 1943.

TOPS Chapter 0446 had a good week with thinner winner Carole K. leading the losses.  

The chapter is in the middle of a summer contest earning points for losing, exercise and supporting one another with calls and cards.  

Mary led the program on “Life is a Journey, Not a Destination.” The members discussed how they could divide their plates into sections for portion control. The program inspired a discussion, and much sharing and support.  

The monthly awards program will be Wednesday.
