MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Martinsburg woman is undergoing psychiatric care after she allegedly fired a handgun into the air Friday afternoon in the parking lot of City Hospital, the Martinsburg Police Department said.

The 50-year-old woman, whose name was not being released, is expected to be charged with discharging a firearm within the city limits and carrying a concealed deadly weapon, according to a police department news release.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m., when the woman was observed in a vehicle in the parking lot near the front of the hospital holding a black handgun to her head, police said.

At one point, the woman got out of the car, fired a shot in the air and put the gun in her purse. She then entered the outpatient waiting room of the hospital, the release said.

The woman became unresponsive and passed out when she was taken to the police station, police said. She was driven back to the hospital, where she was given medical and psychiatric care.

Authorities determined that the woman had consumed alcohol and pills before the incident occurred, police said.

She was listed in serious but stable condition Friday, police said.
