Crawdads crush Suns

HICKORY, N.C. — The Hickory Crawdads extended their South Atlantic League Northern Division second-half lead over the Hagerstown Suns to 3 1/2 games with an 8-1 victory Thursday night.

Hickory (64-44, 24-16) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Hagerstown starter Robbie Ray (2-2) on Joshua Richmond’s two-out RBI double.

The Crawdads made it 3-0 in the second on a walk, Alejandro Selen’s double and RBI singles by Kellin Deglan and Jurickson Profar.

Hickory starter Cody Buckel (5-3) retired the first nine hitters he faced. The Suns (60-49, 20-19) had an opportunity in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs, but failed to score as Buckel worked out of the jam.

The Crawdads made it 4-0 in the bottom half on Profar’s two-out RBI double.

Hagerstown finally broke through in the fifth on singles by Brett Newsome and Wade Moore and an RBI double by Michael Taylor to cut the lead to 4-1.

Hickory opened the lead to 7-1 in the seventh against Suns reliever Shane McCatty on five singles and an RBI fielder’s choice grounder.

Odubel Herrera’s RBI single off Hagerstown reliever Tyler Hanks made it 8-1 in the eighth.
