Nicol allows Suns to get past 'Dads

HICKORY, N.C, — Sean Nicol had his fingerprints all over the Hagerstown Suns’ offense on Tuesday.

Nicol had three hits with two RBIs and topped it off by scoring a run to lead the Suns to a 3-2 victory over first-place Hickory.

The victory put the Suns (59-48, 19-18 second half) within 3 1/2 games of the Crawdads in the second-half race of the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division.

The two teams did all the scoring in the first four innings. A.J. Cole (3-6) went five innings for Hagerstown while reliever Paul Applebee closed the door with four innings of work for the save.

The Suns took a 1-0 lead in the second as David Freitas led off by reaching on a throwing error and took second on Jason Martinson’s single before scoring on Nicol’s double.

Hagerstown took a 3-1 lead in the fourth against Hickory starter Luke Jackson as Wade Moore hit a one-out single and scored on Nicol’s triple to right. Chris Curran hit a sacrifice fly to score Nicol with the deciding run.

Hickory scored runs in the third on Jurickson Profar’s RBI single and in the fourth on Odubel Herrera’s single.

Cole allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two for the victory.
