Mail Call- Aug. 2

August 01, 2011

“You know, I cannot believe, on this debt ceiling, that the Republicans are so stubborn that they can’t compromise on this bill to get the debt limit raised. It seems like the Republicans, Boehner, is catering to the Tea Party and these right-wing talk show hosts like Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling regarding the Hagerstown caller who said that they do not believe anyone who makes a million dollars or more a year does not need Social Security or Medicare. Unfortunately, these people also pay into Social Security and Medicare. It comes out of their checks. So if they pay into it, they deserve to have it. I’m not a millionaire by any stretch of the word, but fair is fair. If they’re not going to get it, they shouldn’t have to pay it.”
— Washington County

“On C-SPAN, Republican Dan Burton gets $172,000 a year, and he gets Social Security, too. Isn’t there a limit how much you can make when you’re on Social Security, or doesn’t that apply to them? The caller said ‘Do you need it?’ He said ‘no.’ The caller said ‘give it back.’ Reply: nothing.”
— Clear Spring

“The Hagerstown teacher caller shows — unintentionally, I’m sure — why so many people oppose teacher pay raises and find their sense of entitlement offensive ... then claiming everyone who disagrees and opposes the teacher pay raises must be uneducated — what conceit — and in this economy, arrogantly exalting that ‘being a teacher, I can have a secure position for life,’ regardless of job performance, and evidently entitled, in your mind, to automatic pay raises, regardless of the economy, performance or anything else. Amazing how such a self-proclaimed educated, intelligent person just doesn’t get it.”
— Frederick, Md.

“I think they should show those images of abortion, to show what a horrific thing abortion is. If we had never seen the images of the Holocaust during World War II, we would never have believed that people could do such things to human beings. Abortion is the murder of innocent babies who have the right, under God, to live, and have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
— Hagerstown

“To the individual who’s concerned about their hummingbirds: They need to plant some coral bells early in the season. Don’t have to worry about frost or winter. They’ll continue to come back each year. And I’ve had hummingbirds since April. Right now the gardens are full of flowers, and they’re at each flower, and also have three feeders, and each of the feeders are being filled about once a week. Plenty of hummingbirds.”
— Big Pool

“To the Hagerstown caller talking about the teapot people, how do you sleep at night: Well, it is ‘Tea Party.’ But since you mentioned about what Jesus said about the poor, he said that it’s our job to take care of the poor, not our government. I think I know a lot more better places how to give my money to the poor than what the government can. Have you ever heard of government waste? Plus, in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, Jesus says if you don’t work, you shouldn’t eat.”
— Boonsboro

“About gays and Christians and born-agains: God made it clear how he felt about homosexuality. We aren’t God. If you know your Bible, God also said judging others was His department, not ours. God told us to love one another. I am not gay. If God can love gays (and He does), who are we to judge them? Some of the kindest, most thoughtful people I know are gay. Oh, we are only Christians if we follow the rules of Christ.”
— Hagerstown

“The government is always looking for new things to tax, so they can spend more. The latest is an additional tax on junk food. They say it will promote healthier eating. Can anyone tell me, how does that work?”
— Hagerstown

“So Hagerstown, you think teachers should send you half of their pay for your part in your child’s education. Was it the teachers’ idea for you to bring a child into this world? Doubtful. I want to know what part of your child’s education you should be held accountable for.”
— Funkstown

“Mr. Obama, you and other Democrats have started comparing yourselves to Ronald Reagan. Sir, I remember Mr. Reagan, and your name should never be mentioned in the same breath as Mr. Reagan. He would have worked 24 hours a day to make sure Americans had jobs, would not have tried to run the country into bankruptcy, and he certainly would have not engaged in the blame game, the scare tactics and the class warfare that you promote every day.”
— Chambersburg, Pa.

“I’m 76 years old, I’ve been collecting Social Security for 11 years. All eight years under George Bush, I got a COLA raise. Now that President Obama’s in, I haven’t gotten one. And all you Democrats calling Mail Call and saying the Republicans are for the rich, I think you better do your history a little better and watch what you say from now on. I think you got things backward.”
— Hancock

“Taxes are not enough for our leaders. Now they’re spending our Social Security like it is taxes. Why have it taken out of your check when it is not going to be there for you?”
— Clear Spring

“This comment is to the person worrying about the swimming pool. All they have to do is buy their own pool at their house, and then they won’t have to worry about anybody else but themself.”
— Hagerstown
