Washington County library receives bequest from Niemyer estate

August 01, 2011

Washington County Free Library is the beneficiary of a bequest disbursement from the Estate of Elizabeth S. “Liz” Niemyer.

As unrestricted funds, the money will be placed in the library’s endowment and might be drawn upon in the future in support of the central library renovation project.

Born in Waynesboro, Pa., Niemyer grew up in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wilson College and did graduate work at the University of Virginia.

Niemyer began working for the acquisitions department of the Folger Library in Washington D.C., in 1950 and was named as the first acquisitions curator.

She was later named the Louis B. Thalheimer curator of acquisitions.

Niemyer lived in Williamsport, was an avid reader and at one time served on the advisory board for Williamsport Memorial Branch Library.
