Community yard sale planned

Christ Lutheran Church will hold its annual community yard sale Friday, Aug. 12, and Saturday, Aug. 13, starting at 8 a.m. each day. It will be held rain or shine. The church is at 216 N. Cleveland Ave. in Hagerstown. Proceeds will benefit the community.

In addition to the yard sale, food, baked goods and ice cream will be available.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0446 in Hagerstown had a great week, with thinner winner Judy G. leading the losses with 5.2 pounds for the week.  

The chapter is in the middle of a summer contest earning miles for losing, exercise and supporting one another through calls and cards.  

Mary led the program on the importance of boundaries. The program inspired an open discussion, and much sharing and support. Next week’s program will be “Divide and Conquer” with emphasis on portion control.

The chapter meets Wednesdays at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 19731 Shiloh Church Road in Hagerstown. Weigh-in starts at 8:30 a.m. and the meeting is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Losses for the week were 38 pounds. The best TOPS losers were Charles House and Trudy Heather, each with a 5-pound loss. The best KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) loser was Lu Marletta. House won the git-r-done prize for the month with a 9 1/2-pound loss. Judy Purdham won for KOPS. Patsy Price won the Ha! Ha! prize. The no-no snack for the week is chips.

Dorothy Martin presented the program on “Eat Smart, Work Smart.” The highlights included the importance of breakfast, stress breaks, having healthy snacks at hand and diet downfalls.

Millie Toms gave her pound puppy to Eileen Mason and Betty Rice gave hers to Bonnie Barnhart. Rice won the monthly raffle. Dina Norris gave a yellow rose of encouragement to Valerie Eccard, who has had eight consecutive weeks of weight loss.  

The group collected $125 and 385 items to be mailed to the troops.

The August contest by Mary Jo Cunningham and Dottie Zimmerman will be “Lose with a Smile.”

Pooch Plunge set for Aug. 24

The eighth annual Pooch Plunge will be Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Claude M. Potterfield Pool, 730 Frederick St. in Hagerstown.

The event will benefit the Humane Society of Washington County.

The city of Hagerstown Parks and Recreation Department provides use of the pool each year for the event.  

Admission to the event for one dog and one handler is $5. Additional humans or pets will pay $2 each.
