Hagerstown B beats A again, this time for PONY region title

July 31, 2011

BOARDMAN, Ohio — The Hagerstown PONY B All-Stars made the most of their second opportunities against their Hagerstown A counterparts this weekend.

Jeff Bennett tossed a four-hitter and Stephen Ashby hit a pair of solo home runs to lead Hagerstown B to a 6-4 victory over Hagerstown A in the PONY East Zone West Region championship game on Sunday.

The win followed a 4-3 victory over the A squad in the winners’ bracket final on Saturday. Hagerstown A defeated East Ohio earlier Sunday to earn the rematch with Hagerstown B in the championship round.

Hagerstown B advances to the East Zone Tournament, which begins Friday in Manchester, N.H.

Just a week ago, the A team beat the B team by scores of 19-3 and 14-4 to win the section tournament, but both squads secured berths in the region bracket.

Hagerstown A took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a walk, a hit by pitch and an error.

The B team tied the score in the second on Ashby’s first home run, then took the lead when Ashby led off the fourth with his second blast. Andrew Fiery’s double scored Bennett and J.J. Cooper later in the inning to give B a 4-1 lead.

The A team cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Miller walked and Riley Arnone hit a two-run homer.

Miller led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, moved to third on a Riley Lazich bunt single and scored on Arnone’s sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 4.

In the top of the seventh, Blake Harne singled, Ashby reached on an error and J.T. Altman singled to load the bases. Cooper doubled down the third-base line to but the B team ahead, 6-4.

The A team put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Bennett slammed the door.

Ashby finished with three hits and Cooper had two, while Bennett struck out four for Hagerstown B.

Airin Martin struck out 11 in a losing cause.
