The South Hagerstown High School Class of 1961 held its 50th class reunion in a four-day event that coincided with the South High Mega Reunion.

On June 23, the South High Alumni Association held a golf tournament at Beaver Creek Country Club. William Shank, Ray Roof, Charles Kunkleman, John Carter and Marvin Shives participated from the Class of '61.

On June 25, about 25 couples traveled to the Rainbow Dinner Theater in Lancaster, Pa., for an evening of entertainment. On Saturday night, around 80 classmates and spouses attended the 55-year South High Mega Reunion at Hager Hall. The class would like to thank the South High Alumni Association for a great event.

On June 26, a late-afternoon family picnic was held at City Park. About 120 people gathered for the picnic. Prizes were awarded for the longest distance traveled to Mr. and Mrs. Wesley (Peggy Lumm) Morgan of Conyor, Texas; and to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gossard of Fort Collins, Colo. Nancy (Shrader) Newkirk was the first to return her reservation. Cheryl (Kimble) Carl and Katherine (Stoner) Muhr received prizes for their first time attending a class reunion. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Robeson, a former teacher, also attended.

Each class member was given a yearbook/directory that was produced by the reunion committee and a CD of the 1961 recordings of the South High jazz band The Midnighters, produced and given by classmate Lloyd "Buddy" Davis of Lady Lakes, Fla. Entertainment at the picnic was provided by Leigh Latchum, violinist and wife of Ken Latchum of Danville, Va. Decorations at the picnic were donated by Ellen (Forsythe) Fahey of Ellen-Joys Florists.

In the evening, many of the classmates attended the Municipal Band concert. One of the marches that was played was "The Imperial March." The march was dedicated to the class, because it was the march that the South High band performed at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in 1960 under the direction of Elwood Kinny. Floral arrangements on the stage were provided by Ellen-Joys Florists.

Reunion committee members were co-chairmen William Shank and Phil Haynes, Tobey (Rudisill) Anderson, Sandy (Grossnickle) Norcross, Ellen (Forsythe) Fahey, Jo (Zimmerly) Bross, Bill Cowden, Robert Holliway, Ray Roof, Emmitt Norcross, Carolyn (Houser) Gibney, Mary (Stull) Householder, Wanda (Adams) Winner and the late John Rowland.
