Maugansville advances to state finals

  • The Mountain Express youth track and field club, comprised of Washington County boys and girls, will have 18 competitors at the AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans on July 30-Aug. 6. The Mountain Express athletes qualified for nationals by placing in the top five in their events at the Area 4 championships last month at South Hagerstown High School.

WALDORF, Md. — Ryan Barton hit a grand slam to highlight an 11-run second inning as Maugansville defeated Elkton 16-6 on Tuesday in the losers’ bracket final of the Maryland State Senior League Tournament.

The game was shortened to six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Barton also had a triple and finished with eight RBIs, Cory Staubs had four hits and Derek Herbert, Taylor Shank and C.J. Owings had two hits each for Maugansville.

Maugansville advanced to the championship round and will play Talbot tonight at 8:30. Maugansville needs to beat Talbot twice to win the title.

Stephenson takes firstat Yingling’s qualifier

Teagan Stephenson shot a 56 to take first place in the fifth WACO Junior Yingling’s qualifier on Tuesday. Ryan Crabtree and Scot Drury tied for second with 58s.

Stephenson shot a 25 on the front nine, the difference among the leaders as all three shot 31 on the back nine.
