Yard debris disposal permits on sale

WASHINGTON COUNTY — Washington County’s residential yard debris disposal add-on permits are now on sale at the Forty West Landfill, county officials announced this week.

The permits are available to holders of landfill permits for an additional $15 and cover unlimited yard debris disposal from the permit holder’s residence only. They are valid through June 30, 2012.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted in June to create the yard waste add-on permits in response to complaints that yard waste would no longer be covered by landfill permits.

That change would have forced all yard waste to be weighed on the scales, where it would cost $63 a ton, with a $10 minimum fee.

Residential landfill permits and the new add-on yard debris permits are available for sale Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Forty West Landfill public-use area at 12630 Earth Care Road in Hagerstown.

Only cash and check-payment methods are accepted.

Acceptable yard debris materials include brush, grass clippings, leaves, tree trimmings less than 4 inches in diameter and related materials, according to a county news release.

Yard debris does not include soil or rock, wooden or metal fencing structures, treated lumber, decorative block or other hard landscaping items, yard furniture or other similar materials, the release said.

Questions can be directed to the Washington County Solid Waste Department office at 240-313-2790.
