CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — A baby boy died after his father found him face down in a swimming pool Monday afternoon in the Avon Bend subdivision, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

Cpl. Vincent Tiong said he is considering the baby’s death a drowning until an investigation is completed.

Residents of the house on Pond Road were getting ready to go out for dinner and noticed that the boy, who was about 20 months old, was missing, Tiong said.

After the boy was found in the above-ground pool, a neighbor began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him, Tiong said.

Rescue crews responded and continued working on the boy, he said.

He was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Tiong said.

The pool was about 4 feet deep. Tiong, who responded to the scene at 6:27 p.m., said he believes the boy was found on the surface of the water.

The name of the child was not released. The body will be sent to Charleston, W.Va., for an autopsy, Tiong said.

There were about six adults at the scene when the incident occurred, he said. There were also two other children at the scene, one of whom was the victim’s twin.

The swimming pool was behind a house where two relatives live. The victim and his father lived in a mobile home near the house, Tiong said.

Pond Road is near Kabletown Road in southern Jefferson County, not far from the Shenandoah River.
