CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — A preliminary hearing for a Harpers Ferry, W.Va., man accused in the fatal shooting of his former girlfriend on July 15 was continued Monday at the request of his lawyer.

Ray Cook, 37, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jenny Perrine, 36, of Martinsburg, W.Va., in the parking lot of the Southern States Cooperative store in Ranson, W.Va.

Cook’s attorney requested the continuance so his client could undergo a psychiatric examination, a spokeswoman in Jefferson County Magistrate William Senseney’s office said Monday.

Police said Perrine was parking her car around 2 p.m. when Cook approached her from the driver’s side.

Perrine and Cook made arrangements to meet at the store the day of the shooting, police.

Cook was apprehended without incident by Ranson and Charles Town police officers as he was walking away from the victim’s car, police said.

A 9 mm semiautomatc pistol was recovered at the scene, police said.
