July 25, 2011

SMITHSBURG — A Cascade man was injured Sunday morning when he was ejected from his Jeep during a single-vehicle crash on Foxville Road (Md. 77) east of Appalachian Court in Washington County, Maryland State Police said in a news release.

Lonnie Kevin Rabbitt, 45, was taken to Meritus Medical Center after the accident, which was reported at 12:07 a.m. Sunday. He was in fair condition Monday morning, a hospital spokesperson said.

Police said Rabbitt was driving a 1998 Jeep Wrangler soft top eastbound on Md. 77 when the vehicle crossed the centerline of the roadway. Police said Rabbit swerved to avoid a westbound vehicle and struck a guardrail. He was ejected from the Jeep, which came to rest on Rabbit's leg, fire board personnel told police.

Police said several factors contributed to the crash, including speed, alcohol, using a cell phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

The accident shut down the roadway for about three hours.
