Gary W. “Butch” Wetzel, 66, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully at home Saturday, July 23, 2011, after a courageous 10-month battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born Friday, April 13, 1945, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Raymond E. Wetzel Sr. and the late Mary Castellucci Wetzel.

He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and St. Maria Goretti High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War.

He was employed at Mack Trucks Inc./Volvo Powertrain for 42 years.

Butch was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and a member of BPO Elks Lodge 378, Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro and UAW Local 171.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Joan M. (Hamsher) Wetzel of Hagerstown; daughter, Angela C. Garrett and husband, Todd, of Whitefish, Mont.; sisters, Deborah Carbaugh and husband, Gary, of Hagerstown, Della Russell and husband, Danny, of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., and Donna Doub and husband, Larry, of Bear, Del.; brothers, Raymond E. Wetzel Jr. and wife, Shirley, and David B. Wetzel, both of Hagerstown; grandson, Skyler Todd Garrett “who adored his Pappy,” of Whitefish; much loved mother-in-law, Alice M. Hamsher of Hagerstown; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sue and John Hoover of Hagerstown; aunt, Fran Stup of Frederick, Md.; best friends, Ron and Brenda Eyler of Hagerstown, who were always there to love and support him; many nieces, nephews and cousins and godchildren, who called him Goompah.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. George Limmer and the Rev. James Nirappel officiating.

Family will receive friends Tuesday, July 26, 2011, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
