Smithsburg steps up patrols to combat thefts from vehicles, storage sheds

July 21, 2011

SMITHSBURG — The Smithsburg Police Department is boosting patrols to combat a string of recent thefts from parked vehicles and storage sheds.

Chief George L. Knight said in an email that officers will use bicycle, foot and vehicle patrols in an effort to catch the person or people who stole items that include a camera, GPS units and a 21-inch Craftsman lawnmower.

He said investigations showed that the victims and other residents heard noises related to the thefts, but failed to call 911 for police assistance.

“The Smithsburg Police Department urges all of its citizens to lock their vehicles, outdoor storage sheds, to secure all valuable lawn tools and to please call 911 when they hear something unusual in or around their property,” the email said.
