July 20, 2011

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — The Franklin County Metric Century cycling event on June 18 raised $7,000 to benefit breast care services offered by Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center, an affiliate of Summit Health, and the Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance.

The event was hosted by the Summit Health Bike Club.

The event began with Laura Gordon, the breast health patient navigator at Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center, in costume as the “Breast Fairy” leading the pack of 142 cyclists away from the Summit Health Center in Chambersburg.

Gordon was riding in a pink Volkswagen Bug, owned and operated by Jeff Fisher of Jeff Fisher Insurance Agency.

The riders then had a choice of riding routes that were 63 miles, 40 miles, or 18.5 miles, through Franklin County. Support vehicles patrolled the course to assist riders and comfort stations with water and snacks were positioned throughout the routes and were staffed with volunteers and nurses.

The next Franklin County Metric Century is scheduled for June 23, 2012.
