HAGERSTOWN — The southbound lanes of Edgewood Drive just south of the intersection with Dual Highway were closed Wednesday afternoon for paving work.

Southbound traffic between Dual Highway and Paul Smith Boulevard is being directed onto one of the northbound lanes of Edgewood Drive.

One lane of Edgewood Drive between Dual Highway and Paul Smith Boulevard remains open for northbound traffic.

Cones have been set up to help direct traffic.

The road closure is part of the Dual Highway/Edgewood Drive intersection and expansion project, according to Geoff McCammon of the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The road is being repaved for the next three days.

On Wednesday, a base pavement was being laid down, and another layer of pavement will added Thursday and Friday.

The road is expected to reopen completely by the weekend, McCammon said.

The work is part of a long-term plan to widen the intersection between Dual Highway and Edgewood Drive, as well as provide curb lanes and sidewalks for bicycles and pedestrians.

The Maryland State Highway Administration’s website says the project will cost approximately $5 million, and funding for it began in 2009.

Pessoa Construction has been contracted to work on the project. It is expected to be completed by the end of September.
