Youth sports leagues offer many opportunities

There is no shortage of sports leagues or organizations for children to get involved with in Washington County. From standards like football, soccer and basketball to newer and growing sports like lacrosse and hockey, there is a sport for nearly every taste.

Here is a list of some of the larger fall and winter youth sports organizations in Washington County. Many of the fall leagues have already closed for preregistration, so hurry if your kids still want to get in on the competition.

Boonsboro Area Athletic Association

Preregistration is now open and practices begin for the 2011 season on July 25. Age groups range from flag football (ages 5-6) to varsity (14 and younger), with cheer groups for each level. Hagerstown Area Youth Soccer League

Established in 1980, HAYSL offers soccer fundamentals and advanced play for ages 4 to 19. Preregistration for the 2011 fall season has already closed, but there is still time to register. For information, visit the league’s website at www.haysl.org.

Hagerstown Junior Basketball League

One of the oldest youth organizations in Washington County, the league was established in 1947. It provides basketball teaching and competition for boys and girls in grades four to eight. The elementary division (grades 4-6) plays its games at Western Heights Middle School, while the Junior Division (grades 7-8) plays at E. Russell Hicks Middle School. Registration for the 2011-12 season will begin in the fall.

Hagerstown Soccer Club

The organization was established in 1989 and incorporated in 1991. It hosts the Mason-Dixon Cup tournament, which draws up to 100 teams to the club’s complex on Cearfoss Pike each year. Teams compete in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League and Baltimore Beltway Soccer League. For information on the club, visit their website at www.hagerstownsoccerclub.com.

Hagerstown YMCA

The Hagerstown YMCA offers a wide range of sports activities for kids ages 4 to 18. The programs are designed to give children a safe learning environment where the focus is on physical, social and mental development.

Programs are offered in volleyball, basketball, swimming, soccer, wrestling, lacrosse and T-ball.

Hagerstown Youth Hockey Association

The Hagerstown Youth Hockey Program has grown steadily since its inception in 1997 at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex. The HYHA’s mission is to teach fundamentals of ice hockey while promoting sportsmanship, fair play and discipline through programs like recreational and youth hockey leagues, learn to play programs, clinics and camps.

Smithsburg Youth Athletics

Originally known as CSL (Chewsville/Smithsburg/Leitersburg), SYA has served children of the Smithsburg area for more than 25 years, providing athletic leagues for children in preschool through eighth grade. Among the sports offered by SYA are flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, wrestling and cheerleading.

Washington County Junior Football League

More than 1,100 children in grades 3 to 8 are registered to take part as players or cheerleaders for the 2011 season. The league is made of 22 teams and 14 cheerleading squads. Early registration has already been completed for this season, but prospective players can still sign up at the time of tryouts. Williamsport Wrestling Club

The Williamsport Wrestling Club is a member of the Mason-Dixon Wrestling League, which consists of 18 teams within a 40-minute radius of Williamsport.
