Braves win Game 1 vs. Boonsboro

SAINT JAMES — Chuck Gordon pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Hagerstown Braves defeated the Boonsboro Pirates 6-4 on Friday in Game 1 of their best-of-3 semifinal series in the Blue Ridge Adult League playoffs.

Tim Kellinger had three hits, including a triple, and an RBI for the Braves, while Keith Kellinger had a double and three RBIs, Tyler Beard had an RBI double and Marcellus Sumlin had an RBI single in the victory.

Game 2 is today at noon at Smithsburg High School.


Higgs named Jacksonville coach

Ali Higgs, a 2001 South Hagerstown High School graduate, has been named as head softball coach at Jacksonville University.

Higgs was a two-time Washington County Pitcher of the Year for the Rebels before starring at Iona University in the circle and at the plate. She was inducted into the Iona Sports Hall of Fame in June.

Higgs served as an assistant coach at Jacksonville for the past five seasons before earning the promotion.
