Suns blanked by Augusta

July 15, 2011

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The weather finally was suitable for baseball, but the Suns still didn’t shine.

The Augusta GreenJackets defeated the Hagerstown Suns 7-0 on Friday in the completion of Thursday’s game, which was suspended in the top of the third inning due to rain.

The second game of Thursday’s doubleheader also was rained out, as was Wednesday’s game.

The second game of Friday’s doubleheader still was in progress late Friday, tied in extra innings.

The GreenJackets took a 1-0 lead from Thursday into the first game Friday. They extended it to 2-0 in the fourth, 6-0 in the fifth and 7-0 in the sixth — scoring four runs off Suns reliever Shane McCatty and another two off Dean Weaver.

Suns starter A.J. Cole (2-5), who pitched two innings Thursday, took the loss. He had five strikeouts in two innings, but gave up three hits and a run.

The Suns were held to three hits in the shutout — singles by David Freitas, Russell Moldenhauer and Mills Rogers.
