Little League state tourneys set to begin at Brunswick

Two Washington County Little League teams will begin play as representatives of District 1 in their respective Maryland state tournaments Saturday afternoon at Brunswick Little League.

The Valley Little League 10-11 All-Stars play their opening game against the District 5 (Northern Maryland) champion at 2 p.m. on Field 2. Valley will play again on Sunday, either at 10:30 a.m. with a loss or 4:30 p.m. with a win.

The 10-11 tournament championship round is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday and, if necessary, Friday. The state tournament is the final level of competition for the 10-11 division.

The Sharpsburg Little League 9-10 All-Stars play their first game against the District 8 (Eastern Shore) champion at 5:30 p.m. on Field 1. Sharpsburg also will play again Sunday, either at 1 p.m. with a loss or 7:30 p.m. with a win.

The 9-10 tournament championship round is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday and, if necessary, Friday. The winner of the state tournament advances to the Eastern Regional Tournament in Cranston, R.I., beginning July 30.

Next weekend will bring the start of the 11-12 state tournament at Maugansville Little League, as well as the junior and senior state tournaments, which both will be played at Robert Dean Stethem Memorial Park in Waldorf.

The 11-12 tournament will open July 23 with games at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. Conococheague Little League, the District 1 representative, has a bye in the seven-team field and will play its first game on July 24 at noon.

The 11-12 championship round is set for July 28 and 29 (if necessary) at 6 p.m. The state champion advances to the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament in Bristol, Conn., beginning Aug. 5.

Valley opens the junior state tournament against the District 8 champion on July 23 at 5 p.m. Valley will play again on July 24, either at 1:30 p.m. with a win or 5 p.m. with a loss. The state champion advances to the Eastern Regional Tournament in Freehold Township, N.J., beginning Aug. 5.

Maugansville begins play in the senior state tournament against the District 5 champion on July 23 at 10 a.m. Maugansville will play on Sunday at 10 a.m. with a loss, or get a layoff until July 26 at 6 p.m. with a win. The state champion advances to the Eastern Regional Tournament in West Deptford, N.J., beginning Aug. 5.
