Fire company to host shrimp, ham dinner

Potomac Valley Fire Co. will hold a steamed shrimp and ham dinner Saturday, July 30, at the fire hall in Dargan.

Tickets cost $15 and can only be purchased in advance. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The meal includes one pound of steamed shrimp, ham, green beans, baked beans, hushpuppies, coleslaw, homemade rolls, ice tea and coffee.

Rochefort to speak at Sharpsburg Library  

Did you ever cook using an utensil called a salamander? Deborah Rochefort will talk about 18th-century cooking utensils, one of which is a salamander, at Sharpsburg Library Thursday, July 21, at 7 p.m.

Ag Expo to feature Iron Chef competition  

The Washington County Ag Expo and Fair will feature Iron Chef and Iron Chef “Burgers” Competition on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24,  in the Twigg Cycle activity tent.  

Competitors have two chances to form a team and demonstrate culinary talents and expertise at one or both of the Iron Chef competitions.  

The competition is open to amateur and professional chefs, home cooks and back yard grillers. Charcoal grills will be provided to each team.  

On Saturday, July 23, Iron Chef teams will prepare one appetizer, one main dish and one dessert for the mystery judges.  

On Sunday, July 24, Iron Chef Burger Teams will prepare the perfect burger for the mystery judges.

Ag Expo is held at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike, about 7 miles south of the Interstate 70 exit.

Ag Expo to hold cheese carving contest  

A Cheese Carving contest sponsored by the ag marketing department and the economic development commission will be held at the Twigg Cycle activity tent at Ag Expo and Fair on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24.  

The children’s cheese carving contest for those 12 and younger will be held Saturday, July 23, from 2 to 3 p.m. and the amateur cheese carving contest for all ages will be held Sunday, July 24, from 1 to 3 p.m.  

With a block of cheese, competitors will have one hour to carve a masterpiece.  Awards will be given out for the most imaginative, finest art, most fair related and judges’ choice. Everyone gets a ribbon. Registration before the cheese carving is suggested.
