John Elmer Rowland, 68, of Williamsport, Md., passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at his home.

Born April 17, 1943, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Marshall Edward and Alice Louise Brandenburg Rowland.

He was a 1961 graduate of South Hagerstown High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Coppin State in Baltimore, Md.

He was employed by the Maryland prison system as a case manager for 26 years until retiring in 1996. After retirement, he worked for 10 years for the Western Maryland Consortium as a counselor.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War.

John was an active member of Benevola United Methodist Church in Boonsboro, Md. He taught Sunday school and was a youth leader.

He was an active member of Potomac Playmakers, original Sophisti "Cats" Booster member, past president of the Williamsport Wrestling Club, and a member of Potomac American Legion Post 202 of Williamsport.

Survivors include his wife, Carol E. Ridenour Rowland, to whom he was married for 43 years; daughter, Cinnamon Kaye Rowland of Hagerstown; son, John Charles Rowland and his companion, Anne, of Hagerstown; grandson, Brett A. Rowland of Hagerstown; granddaughter, Ella G. Rowland of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Kirsten and Ian Sundstrom, and Seth and Maddie Brown, all of Hagerstown; brother, Marshall E. Rowland of Williamsport; and sister, Kathy A. Witman of Frederick, Md.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, James Rowland; and brother, Norman Rowland.

A memorial service will be Sunday, July 17, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Benevola United Methodist Church with Pastor John Dean officiating.
