Hearing set on city ward numbers

July 14, 2011

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The City of Martinsburg Redistricting Committee will host a public hearing next Thursday at 5 p.m. in City Hall to receive input on the city's redistricting plan.

City Attorney Floyd M. "Kin" Sayre formally announced the hearing at City Council's regular meeting Thursday evening.

Sayre, who is serving on the committee with City Recorder Gena Long and Council At-Large members Rodney Woods and Gregg Wachtel, said the panel has only met once for organizational purposes.

State law requires wards and other election districts to be as nearly equal in population as possible.

Divided equally, each of the city's five wards would have about 3,445 residents, based on the 2010 census population of 17,227.

Based on unofficial data, the number of residents in Wards 4 and 5 appear to fall well below the ideal population total while Ward 3, which includes what were fast growing areas west of interstate 81, exceeds 4,000 residents, according to unofficial data released by the city.

Residents may request a current ward map by contacting Long at 304-264-2131, ext. 273. Maps also are posted online at www.cityofmartinsburg.org.
