Underground fuel tank to be replaced at Northern Middle School

July 13, 2011

An underground fuel storage tank will be removed from the grounds of Northern Middle School and replaced by an above-ground tank, under a contract approved this week.

Total Environmental Concepts, of Gaithersburg, Md., was awarded the contract with a low base bid of $119,451. The Washington County Board of Education unanimously approved the contract Tuesday as part of its consent agenda.

The other bidders and the amounts of their bids included Petroleum Services, of Baltimore, $136,495; Subsurface Technologies, of New Windsor, Md., $159,449; and Apex Co., of Rockville, Md., $162,435.

Any contaminated soil will be removed, and the excavated site will be filled with stone, according to presentation documents. Soil remediation would cost $65 per ton, and additional stone fill material would cost $20 per ton.

Work will begin immediately and is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 15.
