Municipal Band's 97th season continues Sunday

July 12, 2011

The countdown to 100 continues and there is still time to hear the Hagerstown Municipal Band in City Park this summer.

The band began its 97th season of free concerts June 12 at the Peter Buys Band Shell in Hagerstown City Park.

The concerts will continue each Sunday at 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 21 and are under the direction of Lynn Lerew who has been conducting the band for 36 years. He has also invited audience favorite Loras Schissel, conductor of the Virginia Grand Military Band, to share the podium on Aug. 7.

This Sunday will be "Conductors Night" when various members of the band will take the baton to conduct the band.

On July 24, the band will feature Neal Corwell who will be joined by the U.S. Army Tuba Quartet. Corwell, a native of Clear Spring, is an active member of the tuba quartet, as well as, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets and the U.S. Army Ceremonial Band.

Vocal soloist Rosanne Fraley will be featured July 31.

While the 11-week summer season for the band concludes Aug. 21, an additional concert titled "Twelfth Night," under the direction of Joel Guyton and Bill Wilson, will be Aug. 28.

Select members of the band will fill City Park with music of the big band-era that will help attendees "swing into fall."

The band will also be playing additional concerts in the fall and winter.
