Mary Virginia (Purnell) Goetzke, age 104, formerly of Hancock, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Fahrney-Keedy Nursing Home, Boonsboro, Md.

Born April 7, 1907, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Amanda Hartley Purnell, and the widow of Henry Goetzke, who died in 1989.

She was a resident of Baltimore City most of her adult life.

She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Baltimore and attended St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Hancock.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 3, Hagerstown, and formerly a member of Alpha chapter 1, Order of Eastern Star, Baltimore, where she served three terms as Worthy Matron.

She is survived by one brother, Howard Purnell of Greencastle, Pa., and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Genevieve Sipes; and two brothers, Frederick and Edwin Purnell.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 13, at 5 p.m., at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, Md. The Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt Jr. will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Garden of Faith Memorial Park, Baltimore.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 p.m. until the time of services.
