Two firefighters treated for heat exhaustion while fighting hay fire

July 11, 2011

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. — Firefighters from eight fire departments worked Monday afternoon to contain a blaze started when hay ignited in a Guilford Township, Pa., field.

Fayetteville Fire Chief Bill Wishard said two firefighters were examined at the scene for heat exhaustion.

“There were about eight acres involved, a lot of fire. It was being driven by wind,” Wishard said.

Crews with brush trucks attacked the blaze around its perimeter. Wishard said a farmer was using a harvester for the hay and reported one of the tractor’s bearings overheated, starting the fire at the intersection of Eby and Bikle roads.

Crews were on the scene for about 2 1/2 hours. Responding fire departments were Mont Alto, Franklin, Buchanan Valley, Waynesboro, New Franklin, Friendship, Marion and Fayetteville.
