July 11, 2011

FREDERICK, Md. — Police said they have a first-degree murder warrant for a Frederick man in connection with the shooting death Friday night of a Frederick woman in the Orchard Terrace area.

The suspect has been identified as Melvin William Smith, 27, also known as “Rock,” according to a news release from the Frederick Police Department.

Police said they consider Smith to be armed and extremely dangerous.

He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on his right forearm of a skull and other images, and he has “izzy” tattooed on his right wrist, police said.

On Friday at 7:25 p.m., the Frederick Police Department received several calls for a shooting in the area of Orchard Terrace and Hill Street, the release said.

The first responding officers found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the release said.

Medical personnel arrived and determined that the woman, identified as Tranice Richardson, 33, was dead, police said.

An investigation determined that Smith and Richardson had been involved in a romantic relationship, police said.

Anyone seeing Smith may call the Frederick Police Department at 301-600-2102. Information also may be reported anonymously by calling 301-600-8477 or by emailing fpdcrimetip@frederickmd1police.org.
