HAGERSTOWN — Playing visitor in their own park, the Federal All-Stars took the lead with Malik Carey’s leadoff homer in the first and never looked back Sunday, handing Valley its first loss in the Maryland District 1 11-12 Tournament, 7-3.
Myles Nicholson hit a pair of home runs and Nathan Kline added a solo shot for Federal, which will host Conococheague tonight at 6 in the winners’ bracket final.
“We flexed today. Showed some power,” said Federal manager Charlie Wood.
After Kline’s homer in the second, Valley halved the lead in the bottom of the inning. Jared Durning singled and Duke Zimmerman walked before Trevor Hatcher singled to the fence. Durning was able to cross the plate, but the throw from left had Zimmerman out at third.
In the third, Carey reached on an infield single with one out, allowing Nicholson to do some damage with a two-run shot, making it 4-1 Federal.
Durning’s RBI single in the bottom of the third again cut the lead in half, but Federal struck back.
Thomas Cremins reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored from second on an infield error in the fourth.
Nicholson homered again in the fifth, a solo shot to right-center field that made it 6-2.
In Valley’s fifth, Bryce Scharenbroch reached on an error and took second on a passed ball. Ryan Kolich walked before Ryan Bywaters reached on another infield error that scored Scharenbroch.
Federal’s closed the scoring in the sixth when Ben Quirple reached on an error and scored on Carey’s RBI double.
