Five golfers from Beaver Creek Country Club and two from Fountain Head Country Club will be in the field when the 90th Maryland Open opens Monday at Maryland Golf & Country Club in Bel Air.

The Beaver Creek contingent is headed by pro Dirk Schultz, along with Alex Hoffman, Chuck Thatcher, Bernie Deane and Chris Taylor. Pros Jim Schouller and Brian Boggs will represent Fountain Head.

The Open has been frustrating for Schultz, who has finished second in the event five times. Last year, Schultz shot a first-round 66 to lead the field before ending in a tie for 23rd at Hillendale.

Maryland G&CC is hosting the Open for the first time since 1977. The Maryland State Golf Association has the course set up to cover 6,938 yards at par 72.

After completion of 36 holes on Tuesday, the field will be cut to the low 40 players for Wednesday’s final round.

Monday’s tee times for the locals: Hoffman (1st hole, 7:41 a.m.); Thatcher (1st, 8:03); Schultz (10th, 8:36); Schouller (10th, 1:25); Boggs (10th, 1:36); Deane (10th, 1:47), Taylor (1st, 1:58).

The defending champion is Denny McCarthy of Argyle Country Club.

Second-place finish
Steve Ligi, along with his father Edward, finished in second place in the 49th annual Middle Atlantic Father-Son championship last Tuesday at Fountain Head Country Club.

Steve, a Frederick, Md. resident and member at Beaver Creek Country Club, and Edward, playing out of Crestbrook Park in Watertown, Conn., shot a 4-under 67 for the runnerup slot.

Rick and Andrew Sovero, from Rolling Road, went around the Fountain Head course with a 6-under 65 for the win.
