Keith Wayne Maletzky, of Hagerstown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, 2011. He was 50 years old. Keith fought a 38-year battle with arthritis, diabetes, kidney and many other health problems. He was given a kidney by his sister in 1990 and had a second transplant of kidney and pancreas in 2000. He is the son of William (Bill) and Dolores Maletzky. He leaves a daughter, Jessica.

Keith graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1978. He was a student at the (then) Vocational Tech School in the refrigeration/air conditioning field. Keith worked for many years as an air-conditioning maintenance man. He worked in Florida and in Frederick, Md. He worked until 2005 and became certifiably disabled in 2008. Keith lived with constant pain, but was often seen with a big smile on his face. He had a strong desire to live and fought through each major illness. His goal was to watch his granddaughter, Samantha Ann Thomas, grow up. He also treasured his many friends.

Keith is survived by his parents, Dolores and Bill Maletzky; his daughter, Jessica Thomas and her husband, Dan, and granddaughter, Samantha Ann Thomas. He is also survived by a sister, Lynn Maletzky of New Bern, N.C., and her friend, Charles Hill; a brother, Steven Maletzky of Silver Spring, Md.; an uncle, Ted Hambright and wife, Diane; cousins, David and Doris Hambright of Centreville, Va., and Kenneth, Maribeth, Douglas, Carol, Paul, Carole, Robert and Suzanne Hambright; and cousins, Melissa and Kirk Thrush. He also leaves nieces, Megan and Amy Maletzky.

He was preceded in death by an uncle, Darrell Hambright; and his grandparents, Harold and Gladys Hambright and Hedy and Bill Maletzky.

He also leaves a lifelong friend, Rick Whisner.

Services will be Monday, July 11, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Elizabeth Webster officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 10, 2011, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
