Mr. Robert A. Fahnestock Jr., 83, a resident of St. Catherine’s Nursing Center, Emmitsburg, Md., and formerly of 5849 Rowland Hill, Cascade, Md., passed away at 3:35 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the nursing home.

Born Feb. 13, 1928, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert A. Fahnestock Sr. and Helen E. (Gipe) Fahnestock.  

Mr. Fahnestock was a graduate of Smithsburg High School, with the class of 1947.

He and his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Marie V. (Grams) Fahnestock, were married June 26, 1948, in Smithsburg Methodist Church. They had lived at their present residence since 1960. Mr. Fahnestock was employed as a signalman for Western Maryland Railroad, later CSX Railroad, for 41 years. He retired Sept. 1, 1988.

He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Sabillasville, Md., where he served as a deacon. He also was a member of Brotherhood of the Railroad Local 31; South Chapter AARP 2977 of Waynesboro; National AARP; a life member of Blue Ridge Sportsmen’s Association; and former member of Blue Ridge Fire and Rescue.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Esther Marie Slemmer of Waynesboro, Carole Ann Caswell and her husband, Earl, of Manchester, Pa., Marie A. Lastrina and her husband, Sebastian, of Charles Town, W.Va., Denise L. Baker and her husband, Ralph, of Chambersburg, and Robert A. Fahnestock III and his wife, Sandra, of Thurmont, Md.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty L. Gladhill of Sabillasville, Mary Jane Brennan of Port Orange, Fla., and Lelia M. Toms of Rocky Gap, Va.; an aunt, Bernadette Brown of York, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Janet I. Comings officiating. Burial will follow in Jacob’s Church Cemetery, Liberty Township, Adams County, Pa.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home.
