BlueClaws beat Suns with walk-off slam

July 04, 2011

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Travis Mattair hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Lakewood BlueClaws to a 6-2 victory over the Hagerstown Suns in the South Atlantic League on Monday.

The win created a three-way tie atop the Northern Division, with Hagerstown, Lakewood and Hickory all at 7-5.

Zach Collier started the winning rally with a one-out double off Suns reliever Wilson Eusebio (0-4). Eusebio walked Jim Murphy intentionally before issuing an unintentional free pass to Domingo Santana.

Anthony Hewitt was called out on strikes before Mattair ended the game with his blast to left-center.

The Suns had tied the game at 2 in the top of the seventh when Blake Kelso singled, stole second and came all the way around to score on catcher Cameron Rupp’s errant throw.

Hagerstown got its first run in the third inning. Adrian Sanchez went station-to-station, reaching on a single and advancing on a ground out, a fly out and a single from Jason Martinson.

Lakewood answered with RBI singles from Collier and Murphy in the bottom of the third off Suns starter Taylor Jordan.

Philadelphia Phillies reliever Brad Lidge got the start for Lakewood in a rehab assignment. He pitched one inning, giving up back-to-back singles to Kelso and Sanchez but escaping without allowing a run.
