Youth baseball revs back up with 9-10 final

July 04, 2011

After finally getting a couple days off, the Sharpsburg Little League 9-10 All-Stars will try to complete their improbable run to the Maryland District 1 title this evening.

Sharpsburg plays host to Valley tonight at 6 p.m. in the district championship game. The winner advances to the state tournament July 16-22 at Brunswick Little League.

Sharpsburg beat Conococheague 13-11 in the first round of the district tournament on June 24, only to have that victory overturned due to an ineligible player on the roster.

Undaunted — perhaps inspired — by being puched into the losers’ bracket, Sharpsburg rattled off six wins in six days, last week.

They capped off the week Saturday with a 9-6 win over previously unbeaten Valley to force today’s final game.

In other action tonight, South Mountain plays at Valley at 5:30 in the losers’ bracket final of the District 1 Senior tournament. The winner travels to Maugansville for the championship round Thursday at 5:30.

On Wednesday, the District 1 11-12 tournament gets under way with four games.

Defending district champ Halfway hosts Sharpsburg, Clear Spring plays at Valley, American goes to National and South Mountain travels to Conococheague.

Federal, West End, Maugansville and Hancock all drew first-round byes. The winners of Wednesday’s 11-12 games will host those teams in second-round games Thursday.

The district championship round will be played July 15 and 16, if necessary.

Maugansville Little League is hosting the 11-12 state tournament July 23-29. The winner advances to the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament in Bristol, Conn. in August.

The District 1 Junior tournament could end Wednesday if unbeaten Valley defeats Maugansville. Valley won the first meeting 19-0 in the winners’ bracket final Friday.

If Maugansville wins, it would host the final game Friday at 5:30.
