Mail Call- July 5

July 04, 2011

“I was just wondering if anyone could tell me why the water fountain in the center of the City Park lake is no longer operating. It was so attractive and enjoyable for park visitors. I certainly hope that it’s not because of budget cuts.”
— Hagerstown

“Regarding the individual who called into Mail Call about trying to contact these county commissioners: I, too, have experienced the problem with no returned calls. ... Never had the courtesy of a returned call. I will remember this at election time. I will not be voting for these individuals.”
— Fountain Head

“Tim Rowland’s editorial in Sunday’s paper, 6/26, was excellent. Money for nothing but good looks and snake mouths. All this talk about Jon Stewart and his political views — what about Steve Colbert? He makes fools of politicians in front of them, also.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about the trashing lately to our county commissioners. There is one county commissioner who gets things done quickly. He is Mr. Cline. I had a road safety problem, and he got it resolved and repaired for me in less than 48 hours. Jeff Cline, you are the man who gets things done.”
— Boonsboro

“This call is in response to the caller from Hagerstown who said you voted for President Obama to prove you’re not a racist. That is the most ignorant comment I’ve ever heard anybody say in Mail Call. I can’t believe that he thinks anybody just voted for him to prove they’re not a racist. To be an idiot, you would have voted for McCain and Palin. McCain thinks we fought in Afghanistan before, and Palin don’t even know what Paul Revere did. To vote those two in, the country would have been a disaster.”
— Washington County

“I was calling about the Direct Air that’s coming into Hagerstown. I wanted to say what a blessing it was to use their service on Sunday. It only took an hour and five minutes from Myrtle Beach to fly back home, and we drove down to leave a vehicle at our residence down there and it took 12 hours, since we were on 95 and there was a backup. So I hope Direct Air will stay in Hagerstown, and I hope they will continue the service because it will be very useful to us.”
— Fairfield, Pa.

“This is on raising Medicare age to 67. We got two senators in there who want to raise Medicare age to 67, which, you know, that might not be a bad idea, but then they want to raise the premiums for millions of current beneficiaries. That is stupid. People on Social Security haven’t got a pay raise or anything else. You two senators want to raise premiums. People on fixed income can’t make it now because of you stupid people in Washington, D.C. I think you two senators, best thing for you to do is get voted out of office because you aren’t helping people. You’re making it harder on people.”
— Hagerstown

“I’d like to add my opinion to whether Social Security is an entitlement. I may be a senior, but I’m not demented. All the years I worked and my money went into Social Security, I was led to believe this was going into a lockbox — oh, yeah, a lockbox that’s now being robbed by the government. I’m curious whether Congress enjoys the same entitlement.”
— Hagerstown

“This is on the issue of Washington County Public Schools getting their pay raises. To the person who called in, you could let them know that Washington County Public Schools is now hiring. ... There are a lot of openings. So if you feel that you’re not getting a raise where you were, or you feel that you’re neglected, please apply at Washington County.”
— Boonsboro

“This is written to Jack Myers. Mr. Myers, you had a letter sent in the paper the 20th of June about endangered women. Please submit that again. That’s the best letter I’ve read in a long time, all so true. I cut it out to save it, and I wish you’d put it in the paper again so everybody could read it. It is so true.”
— Hagerstown

“Why do the Republicans insist on no tax increases? I see no reason for those who benefited from the Bush tax cuts over the last 12 years, mainly those making a million dollars or more, that they could not see their taxes increase. What we have going on, though, is those who could benefit the least — the poor, the elderly, children — are the ones having programs taken away from them. I don’t think that’s fair.”
— Hagerstown

“I’d like to know whose idea it was at the DMV to not have tag referrals there. Hagerstown’s always had tag renewals at the DMV. I’d like to know whose idea it was ... you send your tag application down to Baltimore. Somebody tell me.”
— Clear Spring

“What a great festival was held this past weekend at Blue Ridge Summit. What a great job you did. ... If you missed this, set your calendar for next year.”
— Sabillasville, Md.

“I have to call and say that I enjoy — I get the paper, I’ve gotten it for 30 years, and I enjoy the paper every day. I especially enjoy Mail Call because I get a chuckle out of everything that people write in. People get so upset and so worried and so mean sometimes in there that I laugh at them.”
