AAUW awards scholarships to county students

Awards funded by proceeds from American Association of University Women┬┐s annual used book sale

As a result of this year’s successful AAUW used book sale, the Hagerstown Branch of the American Association of University Women was able to award 13 scholarships to Washington County students.

First-time recipients are Jenna Hull from Hancock Middle-Senior High, who will attend West Virginia University with plans to pursue a degree in nursing; Sally Ann Johnston from North Hagerstown High, who will attend Hood College and major in early childhood education; Alicia Laureti from Washington County Technical High, who will attend Chestnut Hill College to major in computer science; Danielle Moore of North Hagerstown High, who will go to Virginia Tech and major in aerospace and ocean engineering; Kandis Stoy of Williamsport High, who will go to Shepherd University and major in business and accounting; and Tessa Walls of Hagerstown Community College, who plans to attend University of Maryland at College Park and major in physiology/neurobiology.

Current AAUW holders of AAUW scholarships who reapplied, met academic and financial need requirements and were granted renewals are: Ginger Fink, who attends Hagerstown Community College and is majoring in radiology; Anastasia Gaines, who attends Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is studying communications/media with a focus on marketing; Camille Heim, who attends West Virginia University and is pursuing a degree in pharmacy; Amanda LaFollette, a junior at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) at Hagerstown who is majoring in criminal justice; Meredith Reynolds, who is at Bridgewater College pursuing biology/preveterinary studies; Stephanie Toone, a junior at Hood College in Frederick, Md., majoring in elementary education and special education; and Samantha Truax, a junior at Hood College who is majoring in elementary education and special education.

The scholarship committee announced the following named scholarships in honor of AAUW members, past and present: the Louise Beachley Scholarship to Toone; the Dorothy Cochrane Scholarship to Walls; and the Joann Fillingham Scholarship to Laureti.
