Pa. hotel standoff ends peacefully

July 03, 2011

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Police said a standoff at a southcentral Pennsylvania hotel ended peacefully, and the gun turned out to be a toy — but the man was wanted in another state.

John Jacobi, 46, of Mount Airy, Md., was charged after he was taken into custody Sunday afternoon.

Pennsylvania State police spokesman Trooper Thomas Pinkerton said a guest reported seeing a man with what was described as a machine gun at the Best Western hotel at 125 Walnut Bottom Road in Shippensburg Township in Cumberland County at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The clerk at the hotel told police that he got involved in an argument with Jacobi over a theft of money from his room, police said.

Police evacuated a nearby church and told other guests to remain in their rooms.

After the man surrendered at 1:45 p.m., the gun was found to be a toy replica of a Thompson machine gun, Pinkerton said.

The man was arrested after he was found to be wanted on an assault charge in Carroll County, Md.
