Man stabbed in shoulder during robbery attempt

A man was stabbed in the shoulder Sunday afternoon during an attempted robbery in a downtown Hagerstown alley, Hagerstown Police Sgt. Wayne Zimmerer said.

The victim, a man in his early 20s, was walking in an alley off of North Locust Street behind Otterbein United Methodist Church around 3 p.m. when a man approached from behind and tried to take his bicycle, Zimmerer said.

When the man refused to give up the bicycle, the assailant stabbed the victim, causing a minor laceration to his right shoulder, he said.

The suspect was described as a man about 6 feet, 2 inches tall with short brown hair and a thin build, wearing a white tank top and blue striped shorts with another shirt tied around his waist, police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Meritus Medical Center with nonlife-threating injuries, Zimmerer said.
