School board members step down from negotiating team

June 30, 2011

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Two Waynesboro Area School Board members have resigned from the committee engaged in ongoing negotiations with the district’s teachers union regarding a contract.

Negotiators for the school board and the Waynesboro Area Education Association have been meeting since early 2010.
Now, school board members K. Marilyn Smith and Pat Heefner have resigned, citing their defeat for re-election in May’s primary.

“I feel with negotiations going as long as they’ve been going on and the next negotiation meeting isn’t until the end of August, someone who will be on the board after (the municipal election in) November should be on the team instead of us lame ducks,” Smith said.

School board member Chris Lind will remain on the negotiating team, as will lawyer Richard Galtman and Superintendent James Robertson. Replacing Smith and Heefner will be board members Leland Lemley and Billie Finn.

Lind thanked the two women for their service and said they contributed to a cordial atmosphere in the process. Smith said she served on negotiating teams in two previous rounds of contract talks.

Representing the teachers are Marcia Bender from the Pennsylvania State Education Association, Mike Engle, Angie Cales, Eric Yeckley and Jessica Bryan.
