Russell L. Smith Sr., 90, of Titusville, Fla., passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011, on what would have been his 71st wedding anniversary with his loving wife, Wanda.  

He was born in Hagerstown, Md., the son of Russell C. and Frances (Shilling) Smith.  

Russell served in the U.S. Army and was employed by Fairchild Aircraft Division of Hagerstown, later transferring with Fairchild to St. Augustine, Fla., in 1956. He moved to Titusville in 1965 and was employed by the Kennedy Space Center, where he retired in 1985.

Russell is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Russell L. and Darlene Smith of Winston-Salem, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and James Guppenberger of Titusville; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and DeAnn Smith of Titusville; grandchildren, Sheila, Kelly, Scott, Jason, Bradley, Taylor and Mason Smith, Christopher and (Christie), and Dameion and (Melissa) Guppenberger; and great-grandchildren, Joseph, Josh, Jessica, Logan, Ashlyn and Irelyn.

Russell gave many years of volunteer service to I.R.C. Little League and Pop Warner Football, and served as president for the Titusville-Moonport Stamp Club. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 0332 Kennedy Space Center, Fla.; and a member of the American Philatelist Society and American Society for Polar Philatelists. In addition, he was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at 4 p.m. at North Brevard Funeral Home, Titusville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hospice of St. Francis, 1250-B Grumman Place, Titusville, FL 32780.
