Florence L. Smith, 94, formerly of Edgemont Road, Smithsburg, Md., passed away peacefully following a family and pastoral visit June 27, 2011. She was in the loving hands of the staff at Golden Living Center of Hagerstown, Md.

Born Nov. 18, 1916, in Salisbury, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Wilbert “Bert” and Nancy Louella (Koontz) Stevanus.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Merle R. Smith, in 1988.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Lou Leather and husband, Elwood; two grandsons, Douglas E. Leather and wife, Peggy, and Wayne R. Leather and wife, Jill; two great-granddaughters, Meghan Leather and Lauren Leather; two great-grandsons, David Leather and Matthew Leather; and two local nieces, Linda Minnick and Judy Horst.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Mayhew; and four brothers, George Stevanus, Emmet Stevanus, Allen Stevanus and infant brother, Teddy Stevanus.

Florence attended many churches throughout the years. She grew up in the Reformed Church of Salisbury, she attended Trinity Lutheran Church of Smithsburg for many years, and attended several Brethren churches while living in Hagerstown and Baltimore. Her most recent spiritual needs have been met by Pastor Julie Brigham of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Greensburg.

Services will be held Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 11 a.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, with Pastor Julie Brigham officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
