James A. “Jim” Norris, 83, of Frederick, Md., passed away at home surrounded by his loving wife and family on Monday, June 27, 2011.

Born July 9, 1927, in Garrett, Pa., he was the son of the late James E. and Violet L. Norris, who lived in St. James, Md.

He also was preceded in death by his sister, Beth Shank of Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet Barkdoll Norris; his daughter, Kathy Wright and husband, Jeff, of Cazenovia, N.Y.; his sons, Allan J. Norris and companion, Marie Henery, and Matthew W. Norris and fiancée, Jo Ann Kerns, all of Frederick; and his sister, Ardythe Lois Graybill of Texas.

He also is survived by grandchildren, Michael and Kaleigh Norris of Frederick, and Jenna Wright and Kara Wright-Gemmell of Cazenovia; numerous members of a supporting and loving extended family; and many friends.

Jim served in the Navy during World War II, where he began his training in electronics. Upon returning home, he continued his training and graduated from Bliss Electrical School in 1948. He was employed by C&P Telephone, later Bell Atlantic, and retired from AT&T/Lucent Technologies in 1983 after 36 years in communications. He was awarded a White House Communications Agency Certificate of Appreciation for his many years assigned to the Camp David presidential retreat. While at Camp David, he supported countless operations for presidential visits. He also was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America and Communications Workers of America.

After retirement, Jim enjoyed hours of woodworking in his home shop and used his many talents to assist family members building homes, and his skills were greatly appreciated. He also volunteered at FMH Thrift Shop and shuttled vehicles for Hertz Rental Agency.

He was a member of Centennial Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as trustee, usher and Sunday school treasurer. He traveled to Puerto Rico with the Volunteers in Mission group twice. Jim was a member of Columbia Masonic Lodge 58 and past member of York Rites.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. 15 N., Frederick, where a funeral service will be Thursday, June 30, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. George E. Earle Jr. will officiate. Pallbearers will be Allan Norris, Matthew Norris, Michael Norris, Jeff Wright, Greg Kneer and Howard Gram.

In lieu of flowers, honor Jim’s memory by making a memorial donation to Centennial Memorial United Methodist Church, 8 W. 2nd St., Frederick, MD 21701; or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
