Valley, Clear Spring win 10-11 tourney openers

LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

Valley 6, Hancock 5

CHEWSVILLE — Valley held off Hancock on Saturday in the opening round of the Maryland District 1 10-11 Tournament.

Dylan Eyler and Mark Moholt each had two hits for Valley, while Eyler, Moholt and Austin Moser each pitched and combined for eight strikeouts.

Mitchell Potter, Tyler Unger, Lucas Kline, Jimmy Robison and Cody Childers each had a hit for Hancock.

Valley will host Clear Spring on Monday in the winners’ bracket final, while Hancock will host Halfway on Monday in a losers’ bracket semifinal. Both games start at 6 p.m.

Clear Spring 10, Halfway 3

HALFWAY — Zach Hill pitched a complete game in Clear Spring’s win over Halfway in the opening round of the Maryland District 1 10-11 Tournament.

Joe Micco and Chase Reed each had two hits for Clear Spring, while Dylan Altman had three RBIs and A.J. Yost had two RBIs.

Gavin Thompson had two hits for Halfway.


PREP BASEBALL

Team Maryland finishes 5th at Heartland Classic

NORMAN, Okla. — Ryan Redinger, from Mountain Ridge High School, pitched two shutout innings to pick up the win for Team Maryland in a 16-4 rout of Canada at the Heartland Baseball Classic on Saturday.

Redinger also had two hits, including a grand slam, to help Maryland (3-5) to a fifth-place finish in the tournament.

Connor Arnone from Williamsport batted .500 for the tournament, and Kyle McElvey from St. Michaels (.577, 11 RBIs) was the only player from Maryland selected to the all-tournament team.

On Friday, Team Maryland played two games, losing 7-5 to Ohio and 12-4 to Georgia.


LEGION BASEBALL

Funkstown sweeps Mount Airy

FUNKSTOWN — Jack Schwartz hit a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning as Funkstown beat Mount Airy 8-6 on Saturday to complete a doubleheader sweep in Western Maryland District action.

J.T. Root pitched a shutout and Ty Benson, Aaron Stoner and Nic Martin each had two hits as Funkstown won the first game, 10-0.

Benson had three hits in the second game, while Jake Bachtell had two hits and Aaron Jones picked up the win in relief for Funkstown (8-1, 6-1).
