Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - June 25

June 25, 2011

Thumbs up:

To baseball phenom Bryce Harper for injecting some baseball excitement into Hagerstown and the Tri-State area. We wish him luck as he climbs the professional baseball ladder.

To Washington County Commissioners Terry Baker, John F. Barr and Ruth Anne Callaham for paying their own way to Florida on the first Direct Air flight out of Hagerstown Regional Airport June 23.

To Dave Reeder, a longtime administrator in Washington County Public Schools, who left his job as director of secondary education to become superintendent of the Camp Hill (Pa.) School District. Thanks for your years of efforts on behalf of our children and best wishes in the new position.

To Boonsboro High School officials and the Washington County Board of Education for renaming the high school’s track and field complex Scott Field in honor of longtime coach Dwight Scott. This is a fitting way to honor Scott, who worked for the school system from 1959 to 1996, during which time he coached track and field, football and cross country.

Thumbs down:

To those who already are setting off fireworks in area neighborhoods and apartment complexes, and we’re still nine days out from the Fourth of July. Let’s try to keep the noise limited to the holiday weekend.
